Troop 6110 provides the Scouting experience for girls ages 10.5 – 17. Our Scouts come from many communities in the greater South Burlington area. Service, community engagement and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as youth lead their own activities.

Jon McBride’s Big Easy traverses the roots of funk music–early jazz, blues, gospel, and Caribbean styles–playing songs that have entertained audiences for generations. Their skillful musicianship is rooted in jazz and blues traditions but draws on varied experience and eclectic taste, yielding a unique and modern approach to these storied melodies. Matt Hagen’s Classy Boss is a Latin inspired fusion of groovy, stimulated listening. Centered around Spanish guitar, the music reflects elements of Bossa Nova rhythms, classical waltzes and spaghetti western movie scores. Components such as varied percussion, saxophone, flute and voice contribute to an eclectic sound that is both relaxing and invigorating.

Alternate Take features David Marchant on vibraphone, Ted Perry on Keys, Sean Walkama on bass, Clarence Davis on congas and Nick Aloi on drums. Whether playing jazz standards or lesser-heard tunes by composers such as Kenny Kirkland, George Benson, Emily Remler, or Frank Zappa, the ensemble delivers with an energy and style unique to the Green Mountain State.

On drums, Nick Aloi has played jazz throughout Vermont and beyond for decades. Known for his subtle dynamic range of expression, Nick gets called upon for performances by some of the top musicians in the community. Sean Walkama, a clinical psychologist, slings rich melodic solos while anchoring the band to its roots. David Marchant supplies warm tonal colors of the vibraphone with a honed percussive flare inspired by the likes of Mike Mainieri, Milt Jackson and Gary Burton. Clarence Davis focusses on Jazz, folkloric Afro-Cuban forms, and Latin Jazz and serves on the Boards of the Flynn Center and the Discover Jazz Festival. Ted Perry is a pianist, composer, and arranger known for his warm, soulful touch and emphasis on lyrical melodies, grooves, and storytelling in his music. His unique voice blends many genres from the blues and jazz, to folk.

Guitarist Michael-Louis Smith radiates positivity and brings amazing musicians and music-lovers together under the same beat. A top-tier bandleader and recording artist, Michael has toured nationally at major venues such as LA’s Troubadour Club, NYC’s legendary Apollo Theater, and Vermont’s Discover Jazz Festival. Michael’s ensembles Left Ear Trio and MLS Quintet showcase his genre-bending medley of jazz, funk, and afrobeat. In 2012, Michael-Louis Smith and his bandmates backed German Nigerian hip hop/soul star Nneka (Sony Music) on her US tour. The following year, MLS Quintet released First Black Nation (2013), a deeply emotional, multi-movement instrumental that tells a story about the 2010 Haiti Earthquake.

In an interview about the album with Okayplayer’s Revive Music, Michael describes the telepathic connection among his bandmates: “It’s really unique with these guys because we are able to communicate with each other about exactly what we need to do. We all love music and care deeply about it.” Crowds can expect something special at a Michael-Louis Smith performance.
