In the Garden
Like a lot of other Vermonters,
I spent a good deal of time in the garden this week.
And like others, I worked with a sense of some urgency,
Knowing the sun and season will not wait.
I got my potatoes in time, but I was late planting the peas.
If it goes off hot and dry
These late peas will not amount
To much, but the beans,
Squash, and corn will thrive.
It’s like that every year: Not everything
Does well, but always,
Some things do well.
And as it is in the garden, so it is
In the years of our living.
