Circle of Hardship After the Katrina Floods, September 2 & 3, 2005

American Flatbread + Flatbread Kitchen
Friday and Saturday, September 2nd and 3rd, 2005
Tonight’s menu and baking are dedicated to

Circle of Hardship
After the Katrina Floods

I watch and listen in disbelief.
So many people without food or water,
With no place now to call home.

There was a man
Still in his hospital gown
Sitting on a broken door
That floated like a raft;
He did not know his name.

Children cry, mothers scream,
The old and infirm
Are too tired for anything
But silence.

And everywhere you look is the debris
Of broken homes, devastated businesses
And the chaos of civil disorder.

This bakery was flooded once. It was saved by the generosity of fiends, neighbors, and strangers. And that is how the good people of the Gulf Coast will be saved this time. It is the only way anyone ever has been.

Thanks for coming tonight. Love, George
